Town of Atkinson
The construction cost of Atkinson’s new Kimball Library was $185 per square foot, not including fixtures, furniture, and equipment, which carried a budget of $300,000. The design process was a collaborative effort including user groups, staff, a volunteer building committee, and a six member Joint-Task- Force established by the Library Trustees and Town Selectmen.
The design solution included three separate facilities with a shared lobby core within one building. Each facility has its own secured entrance from the main lobby. The main library houses traditional stacks, reading areas, conference rooms, a glass enclosed teen-center, and comfortable seating. The children’s library houses child-oriented stack areas, reading areas, a pre-teen computer learning center, and an enclosed story-telling room. The community meeting room seats 100 occupants and has its own mechanical, electrical, and egress capacities which allows town groups to schedule and utilize the space when the library facilities are open or closed.
