Healthcare: Behavioral Health

State of Vermont Department of Mental Health

Green Mountain Psychiatric Care Center

In response to the closing of the State Hospital at Waterbury following flood damage from Hurricane Irene, an existing 14 bed nursing home was renovated into an eight bed, Level 1 acute care behavioral health center to provide a much needed safe, healthy environment for patients and staff.

The primary focus of the fast-track renovation was to increase safety levels. The existing nurses’ station, which previously had no supervision of the corridors, entrances or exits, was relocated to facilitate a line of site with the existing “L” shaped building. This also created a secured vestibule from the off-unit staff spaces, and provided staff direct access to a new medication room, dictation / work room, and private staff toilets. Existing windows were secured with a polycarbonate and a protective film for privacy.

Mechanical and electrical upgrades, as well as upgrades to finishes, millwork, plumbing, fire safety, lighting and mechanical ventilation systems were incorporate to bring the existing structure up to current standards. A secured exterior gathering space was built around an existing covered picnic area with direct access from the unit.
