Boston Children's Hospital
Inventor Space / Engineering Core
Medical Education and Clinical Simulation
In addition to designing the new state-of-the-art simulation center, SIMPeds™, Lavallee Brensinger Architects also programmed and designed the complementing Inventor Space. Boston Children’s Hospital Inventor Space / Engineering CORE provides three service lines, requiring three distinct and specialized support spaces:
- SIMEngineering™ “focuses on development of whole body mannequins and skills trainers from neonatal to adolescents.”
- SIMInventorSpace™ is an “in-hospital rapid prototyping center.”
- SIMPeds SIM3D Print™ provides “ultrahigh fidelity patient-specific models for surgical planning and preparation.”
Programming and design for SIMEngineering™ centered around creating engineering lab space that provided both adequate design and collaboration space, while also extending the Boston Children’s Hospital brand as the #1 pediatric hospital in the U.S.* and as a leader in pediatric healthcare innovation. The SIMInventorSpace™ workshop houses maker space-style fabrication equipment including: CMC Machine, drill press, table saw and other “maker” related equipment. The 3D imaging and printing lab, SIMPeds SIM3D Print™, houses five 3D printers supporting world-wide prototyping requests. Conference space, offices, display cases, and a break room round out the finished space.
