Town of Reading
Killam Elementary School

K-12 Education:
Primary & Intermediate Schools

The Town of Reading engaged our team to provide a Feasibility study and Schematic Design to study the replacement of the Killam Elementary School. Built in 1968, Killam is an aging school that does not meet the needs of a modern elementary school, lacks adequate space for current educational programs, is energy-inefficient, and has multiple building systems and elements that need replacement. Lavallee Brensinger completed an existing conditions assessment and studied multiple options including a renovation-addition option and a new construction option.

A challenge for the town was whether to combine the Pre-K programs which are currently distributed across the district into a single program located at Killam. Lavallee Brensinger worked closely with the Town and district on both design solutions and communication with the neighborhood to mitigate traffic and safety issues and to bring concerned community members into the design process.

The Town of Reading passed the bond vote to fund the new Elementary School in May 2025, and Lavallee Brensinger is now working on finishing the design for the school, which has an estimated construction cost of $101M and is expected to open in the Spring 2028.

This project is targeting LEED silver certification.
