Southwestern Vermont Medical Center
Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation

Healthcare:
Behavioral Health

In response to the growing needs of their community and strategic healthcare initiatives, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), and Lavallee Brensinger Architects, are collaborating on a multi-phased modernization project that addresses increased patient volumes and service line demands. Phase I, completed in Fall 2023, included the renovation of the main entrance of the hospital, an expanded emergency department (ED), new dedicated behavioral health treatment space, and introduced connectors linking campus buildings.

The redesigned main entrance reflects SVMC’s dedication to enhancing patient care and experience. Upon arrival patients are greeted by a designated entrance and covered drop off. These attributes allow all patients, including those with mobility challenges, to enter the hospital with ease and convenience. The lobby hosts a reception desk which provides patients and visitors with an immediate interaction point, allowing for streamlined navigation and security. Additional seating, a grab-and-go café, and a gift shop enrich the overall experience for patients, visitors, and staff.

Adopting a holistic campus strategy, the team recognized the opportunity to establish vital connections between various buildings and the main hospital. Both existing and new connectors have been strategically implemented in planning to optimize movement for both patients and staff, while safeguarding them from the unpredictable New England elements. The newly constructed connector links the Kendall Emergency Department, the Express Care Building, and the Respiratory Evaluation Center. The existing connector was enclosed and integrated into the new main entrance to establish a direct link between the main hospital and the Medical Office Building. These connectors not only promote convenience and accessibility but also contribute to an integrated and cohesive healthcare campus experience.

Due to increased service offerings and patient volume, the existing ED was no longer conducive to efficiently serving SVMC’s patient population. The design team carried out multiple utilization studies to ensure the most efficient layout and size of the new ED leading to decision to double the size of the existing ED. The increased sf includes high-acuity, low-acuity, collaborative care areas and the expansion of the mental health crisis care area to include 5 specially designed treatment spaces.
