Hetzel Hall

Higher Education:
Residential Life | Student Services

Originally constructed in 1925, Hetzel Hall has been thoughtfully re-imagined to meet the evolving needs of UNH students while honoring its legacy as a historically significant building on campus. The fully renovated residence hall now offers an inclusive, comfortable, and community centric living experience.

Through collaboration with the university, student life, and residents, it became clear that the renovation needed to prioritize accessibility and spaces that promote connection. The design thoughtfully balanced in-demand single and double room layouts with spacious common areas on each floor, encouraging students to spend time outside their rooms and engage with one another. New features like a community kitchen, indoor lounge, and outdoor patio further support a strong sense of belonging and social interaction.

Full accessibility was a major priority and achievement of this project. Strategic structural modifications, including a discreetly integrated elevator and dual accessible entrances, ensure all students can enter, navigate, and fully participate in residential life at Hetzel Hall.

Energy performance and long-term sustainability were also addressed, reducing the building’s carbon footprint while preserving its historic character. The restored façade and modernized interior reflect a commitment to both tradition and progress.
