Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and New England Donor Services (NEDS) have partnered to create a first-of-its-kind Organ Procurement Unit in Massachusetts. This dedicated facility is designed to provide a seamless, state-of-the-art workflow for donor patients and their organs while offering a compassionate, welcoming space for families during their loved ones’ final moments.
Located within BIDMC the unit includes three specialized ICU patient rooms for donor patients, ensuring a dignified and respectful process. Adjacent to this space, two family lounges with a kitchenette offer a retreat for visitors, allowing them to spend time near their loved ones while processing their grief in a supportive environment.
The project also includes the renovation of three operating rooms exclusively for organ procurement, preventing the use of critical ICU spaces needed for other patients. Donors arrive through the Emergency Department and are transitioned to this unit for final preparations before being moved directly to the dedicated ORs. After procurement, organs are transferred to a specialized lab space, equipped with OR-level air quality, where they are tested and prepared for transport across the country.
